Is flashback Friday still a thing or am I showing my age yet again? The #flashbackfriday and #throwbackthursday posts were some of my favourite to read back in the day. There were also #wordlesswednesdays showcasing beautiful photography, which I’ve always loved too.
Anyway.
Speaking of photography, I went looking for a photo of some fritule for a recent post and ended up down the rabbit hole of holiday food photos, which brought back so many happy memories that I figured they deserved a post of their own.
The Underrated winter vacation
Yes I know we all love a European summer, but let me tell you, winter hits different and is INCREDIBLE. Especially if you’re there for Christmas time, because despite having grown up in the southern hemisphere, the cold Christmas somehow feels so perfect. Think little Christmas “houses” offering warming meals and mulled wine and gin. Crisp clean mountain air. Dappled winter sunshine so healing you’ll want to eat outside even though it’s about three degrees. Lots of red wine, braised and slow cooked dishes, pašticada and fish stews, and open fires. And best of all: no crowds.

The eternal Dalmatian Summers
The lazy, island-hopping sun-drenched summer days along the Adriatic Sea are easily what Croatian holidays are known for, and something we’ve been blessed to enjoy countless times. And with all that sea comes some of the best seafood in the world. Our summer eating is a mix of home cooked and eating out, with fresh seafood, delicious seasonal produce, and chilled wines and spritzes the order of the day.

San Jose Del Cabo: sun, sand, and all the margaritas
Opting to celebrate my fiftieth in Mexico was hands down the only way to roll. Waking up in the Mexican peninsula of Baja California on the morning of my 50th, with the dry desert sun beckoning me poolside, the roar of the ocean, and a big plate of chilaquiles to start my day was indescribable. And seriously, the Mexican food alone is more than enough to get me on a plane.

New york city: supersized everything in the city that never sleeps
Can I be really honest without offending anyone? We didn’t go to Manhattan for the food, as good as it was. The big apple is about the experience of that unique and incredible city, and while the portions are as supersized as you would expect them to be, there’s something to be said for a cold beer and a fat juicy burger in the middle of midtown.

cheers-ing my way around the world!
SO MANY COCKTAILS! Far from eating my way through some of my favourite places, I’m almost embarrassed at how many photos I found of drinks taken in seemingly every place we’ve ever visited: from ice cold beers to margaritas to G&T’s to espresso martinis. Lots of local shots too, and LOTS of at home lockdown-era happy hours!

Cheers friends! 🥂
