They say money can’t buy happiness, but as it turns out, it can’t even buy you the opportunity to spend $20,000 on a piece of leather.
If you’ve spent any time shopping online you know the drill. To get your hands on the most covered of handbags, the Hermes Birkin, you must first embark on the psychological odyssey known as “The Game.” It goes something like this: buy the $1000 sandals that’ll give you blisters, the $3,000 blanket you’ll be too scared to actually use, and maybe a $900 scarf you have no clue how to style, all in the name of racking up an impressive prespend to appease a sales associate who treats you with the chilly indifference of a Victorian governess, in the hopes of maybe one day being offered a bag that may or may not be in your preferred size, leather, or colour.
I knew that neither I nor my bank account were built for The Game, but when my fiftieth birthday began to appear on the horizon around mid 2024 I decided that I might treat myself the smart way: via the enormous preloved market in designer bags. I wanted the look, but I also wanted to hold onto my dignity (not to mention my retirement fund). I soon realised, however, that this avenue wasn’t necessarily any easier to navigate, not least because there was no online conversation in which the spectre of being sold a fake Hermes wasn’t mentioned.
In what will forever remain one of my best ever lightning bolt moments, I decided that a replica was exactly what I needed, in order to frugally test out how much I actually liked the whole Birkin vibe before (maybe) splurging on the real deal.
Phase 1: The High Tier Full LEATHER, full Logos, and Complete Packaging SUPERFAKE Replica
The Vibe: Welcome to the Superfake underground.
Right off the bat, and to this day I’m not even sure how, I found myself in the expert-level underworld of “reps.” This is a shadowy realm of WhatsApp sellers, private Reddit groups, factory photos, and terms like “Hermès-grade Togo leather”, “TS/QC/GL/RL” and “hand-stitched saddle seams.” The expertise in these discussions about what makes an excellent high tier rep versus what’s call-out-able would put even the most highly esteemed authenticator to shame. The prices were up there with entry level Louis Vuitton and YSL. I ultimately opted for a mid tier price, around $700AUD, for a 30cm black Birkin with gold hardware.
• Pros: The closest I’ll probably ever get to authentic. I received a bag that smelled like a heady perfume and had hardware that would pass the closest inspection of any Reddit rep lady. Fully branded packaging and a bonus twilly sweetened the deal.
• Cons: Carrying a full blown replica is a form of low-level psychological anxiety. Do I straight up tell anyone who so much as glances at it that it’s a rep? Do I brazenly pass it off as authentic? I knew I’d never pull that off, and my kids laughed at me when I tried.
Verdict: It is a beautiful bag, but I realised that I just wasn’t cut out for the subterfuge. Every time someone complimented it, I felt like I was lying about my entire identity and invariably spilled on the three-versus-five-figure price tag.
Phase 2: The High Quality Full Leather No Logo “INSPIRED BY” REPLICA
The Vibe: “Oh this? It looks like a Birkin? I had no idea.”
Next up, at a lower price point of around $500AUD I found a website full of quality Hermes dupes. No logos to be seen, which I immediately loved better than the superfake, the feel of this leather is absolutely gorgeous. I opted for the 35cm size in rich caramel brown and have used it for work, weekend getaways, and as a carry on for long haul travel.
Pros: Excellent quality, no logos, and it came with the “inspired” unboxing experience in the shape of a large Hermes-esque orange box. I later purchased the 28cm Kelly inspired bag from the same site in the perfect neutral taupe.
Cons: this baby is heavy. The combination of the larger size and what is excellent togo-style leather means that when fully loaded, this bag weighs a tonne.
Verdict: I love love love this bag but with my weakening wrists and lack of shoulder strap it can’t really be used to its full capability. It’s probably the closest to what I would have been looking for if I’d been buying authentic. Overall this site would be my go-to for anything other than standard leather, and their smooth leather bags are still calling my name…
Phase 3: The Cheap and Cheerful Lookalike replica
The Vibe: “I love the style but I’m not stupid enough to spend that much on a bag.”
Once again via Reddit groups I found a couple of sources for excellent “homage” bags. These are the ones you find on Amazon or at boutiques that look suspiciously every bit like a Birkin but have somehow managed to avoid a cease-and-desist. I purchased a cream 30cm Birkin inspired bag in what feels and smells surprisingly close to real leather. Unlike the original or any other reps this also came with a shoulder strap, which despite not being true to the original, I find so much more practical. For $165AUD it ended up being my favourite of all the versions I bought.
• Pros: It’s honest. There’s no logo or branding anywhere so you’re not even pretending that you’re carrying a $20k bag.
• Cons: Honestly? None.
• Verdict: It’s a great bag for someone who likes the shape of a Birkin but doesn’t want to explain why they have a mortgage-sized accessory. It definitely scratched the itch, and is available in all three sizes and a stack of colours.
did my experiment convince me to continue the search for an authentic Birkin?
Unsurprisingly, no. While I do in fact like the shape and style of the Birkin, I don’t care about the logo it carries. In news that was a relief to my husband more than anyone, I wasn’t going to be unboxing an authentic Birkin any time soon. What I ultimately learned is that the Birkin isn’t about the actual bag, nor the price tag. Of course it’s always been about the status, but it’s also about audacity.
A real Birkin looks good when it’s treated like a gym bag. When it’s thrown on the floor; when it’s tossed around the back seat of the car and treated like any other bag. Basically, when you Jane Birkin the heck out of it. I mean, no bag should expect to be treated like it’s a holy relic.
I realised that I don’t need a status symbol on my arm. The black superfake with it’s embossed “Hermes” logo remains at the back of my closet, while the cheap and cheerful cream number gets out almost daily – and has been complimented more times than I can count. (And yes of course I’m giving out purchase details before they know what’s hit them). The tan number is called on when it’s capaciousness I’m after, and is the colour and shape that started it all so I’ll admit to sometimes just taking it out to admire it.
And while there might not be an authentic Birkin or Kelly in my future, there is a luscious looking Chanel 19 inspired flap bag minus the double-C’s calling my name…
